Podcast with Motley Fool: I/O Fund’s View of the Growth Market Right Now

Podcast with Motley Fool: I/O Fund’s View of the Growth Market Right Now

I recently joined the Motley Fool podcast with Brian Feroldi and Brian Stoffel where we discussed electric vehicles, artificial intelligence, and whether growth tech investors should rotate into value. Below, we provide a summary of each video and YouTube clips.

As a bonus, I’m also adding my take on Fastly from podcasts with the Motley Fool and Chit Chat Money. While I remain bullish on the future of edge computing, I voiced my doubts about Fastly when the stock was skyrocketing, reaching a peak of $136.30 last October and a lower high of $122.75 early this year. I summarize my view below.

Why I/O Fund Is Not Selling Growth Stocks

For us, the most important question is whether we are in a secular bear market. We believe in long term buy and hold—except in a secular bear market and a long economic recession. This is because the goal is to avoid holding positions at a loss during an extended period of time.  Therefore, in any selloff, the question we ask ourselves is whether this is a quick correction or secular bear market. Unless you are a day trader, most investors are better off holding through these quick corrections than trying to time both an exit and an entry.

We are not financial advisors, but based on the indicators we follow for our portfolio, we are positioned for a continuation of the long-term uptrend. We anticipate potential strength into the summer months with a high consumer savings rate, strong GDP, and dovish monetary policy from the Fed. Those are excellent signs for a strong economy. The I/O Fund did some buying in late March and are not letting the news headlines push us to close our long-term positions.

On that note, I only recommend a stock if my conviction can withstand a 30% selloff. This is because most tech growth stocks go through periods of exuberance and fear/doubt a few times.

Why I’m Bullish on Electric Vehicles

Last time I spoke with Motley Fool, we discussed electric vehicles. Although stock prices have come down, we remain long. The personal savings rate in the U.S. has soared, reaching 13.9% in February and 27.6% in March. As a result, we expect the auto sector to be strong. Electric vehicles are also answering multiple problems. For example, in China where there is less access to oil the government incentivizes EVs through subsidies. Manufacturers are also producing EVs with cutting edge technology at close to the price of a traditional vehicle.

The AI Economy Will Be 4x Larger Than the Mobile Economy

We are long Nvidia for the trend of artificial intelligence. The AI economy is projected to be four times larger than the mobile economy, and the mobile economy brought us FAANG stocks like Apple, Facebook, and Google. I expect to see some FAANG-level companies arise from the AI economy.

Fastly: Not a Slam Dunk

Last December, I joined the Motley Fool Podcast and voiced my doubts about Fastly. I later discussed Fastly with Chit Chat money. Fastly is not a slam dunk, and I voiced my doubts when the stock was skyrocketing. Below I summarize both videos.

Content apps are a great market for Fastly, but for the really big problems that edge computing will solve, it will be difficult for Fastly to be a clear leader in that market. That doesn’t mean Fastly can’t pull it off, and I’m always for everyone making gains. But I prefer slam dunks and my point was that Fastly would face serious challenges and investors were not factoring that in by saying “Fastly was an edge computing leader.” In fact, Fastly has not had edge computing revenue for nearly 16 months after the launch of the Edge Compute product.

Content app developers will say that Fastly is delivering content in under 20 milliseconds and therefore it is edge. However, Fastly’s core competency is a CDN, which is a space that has been highly competitive for 25 years. CDNs saw major tailwinds from streaming and usage last year, however, this was revenue was not due to edge computing.

As a tech analyst, I stuck my neck out to make sure people knew the real story. It was bold, as this was a favorite stock on social media, and there was a flood of negative responses after I simply pointed out that edge computing was not contributing to the current growth.

There are big problems that can be solved with edge computing and I outline this in the video. There also still seems to be an absence of discussion in the retail community around AWS, Azure and GCP moving into this space with telecom partnerships. Projections show that 75% of data will come from the edge. That will be mainly answered by the companies who own the cloud computing market—Amazon, Microsoft and Google.

In the past, I was also asked what company I would choose between Cloudflare and Fastly; I said Cloudflare due to their strategic approach to capture SMBs. This is a market where Cloudflare performs well.

Podcast: My favorite picks for 2021, Zoom Video, and IPOs/SPACs

Podcast: My favorite picks for 2021, Zoom Video, and IPOs/SPACs

Earlier this month, I joined Jason Calacanis and Alex Wilhelm on “This Week in Startups.” We discussed the current state of the IPO market, Zoom’s pricing power, top stock picks for 2021, and some of the most anticipated IPOs of 2021.

The conversation begins with a discussion about the IPO market and some of the recent froth we have seen. The recent offerings of DoorDash, Airbnb, and C3.ai demonstrate how much demand and hype we are currently seeing for new issues. We discuss if this is sustainable and if future companies are better off going public via a direct listing.

Later, we talk about valuations and different accounting methods companies sometimes use to enhance their numbers. The discussion shifts to Slack’s acquisition and some key differences that allowed Zoom to have more success. I talk about Zoom’s pricing power and why I believe it will continue to thrive in a post-pandemic world.

We wrap up the interview by talking about our top stock picks for 2021 and what IPOs we are most looking forward to next year. My answers include a stock in connected TV space and a fast-growing AI company set to debut in the first half of 2021.

Although I do discuss Luminar, I’ve since cooled off from the company following the announcement that Mobileye is making their own LiDAR sensors.

Podcast with Motley Fool: Big Tech Plus the 1 Stock I’d Buy Right Now

Posted on December 16, 2020June 30, 2026 by io-fund
Podcast with Motley Fool: Big Tech Plus the 1 Stock I’d Buy Right Now

I had the privilege of joining Tim Beyers and Brian Feroldi on The Motley Fool podcast earlier this month.  In the hour-long interview, we cover topics such as big tech, my research process, tech valuations, and we also cover a number of individual stocks including Twilio, Bandwidth, Zoom, Facebook, and Palantir.

The discussion starts off with big tech and why I believe Google Cloud Platform has missed an opportunity to catch up to Microsoft Azure and Amazon Web Services on cloud IaaS. With that said, all three players are aggressively pursuing edge computing and how to combine the compute and storage from hypescalers with the low latency and speed offered by 5G connectivity. This is primarily being accomplished through partnerships between the hyperscalers and telecoms which are best described as “frenemies.”

Later in the interview, we dive into my research process and how I go about finding the top tech stocks.  One example of a trend that I think the market is misunderstanding is telehealth. The market is pricing the opportunity as a covid tailwind rather than pricing and evaluating the opportunity for early innings – especially as AI will merge with telehealth in the near future.

We also chat about what’s on everyone’s mind – which is whether tech valuations are in a bubble right now. I give some guidelines on what I consider to be attractive valuations versus unattractive valuations in the tech space and I break this down by annual revenue growth rates.

Towards the end of the interview, they ask what is the one stock I’d buy right now and the one stock I’d sell right now. My answers include a lesser-known stock in the OTT advertising space that I am bullish on.

Podcast: Tech Growth Stocks ZM ROKU FSLY BTC and more

I had a great time talking with Ryan Henderson and Brett Schafer on the Chit Chat Money podcast last week. They challenged me with questions on the bear case for Roku and Zoom Video. For instance, they asked if Roku will lose to the tech giants on over-the-top and if Zoom has reached peak usage.

We also talked about sensitive topics such as what it’s like being a woman in finance — you’ll hear whether I think it’s more challenging to be a woman in finance or tech and why. We also revisited Fastly, which I’ve been hesitant to invest in, and bitcoin, perhaps the most contested protocol of all time.

Most importantly, they ask what saying or philosophy I disagree with in investing and one piece of advice I have for tech investors. You can find my answer to both towards the end of the interview.

Video: Our Stock Picking Strategy

Video: Our Stock Picking Strategy

About a week ago, Dan Shvartsman from Seeking Alpha interviewed Knox Ridley and I about the Zoom call we made last Fall, the trade made In January in the low-$60s, and the subsequent trades made in March in the low $100s and mid-$100s on our premium site. We discuss whether the company’s valuation matters now, and how our research site determines if we should hold on or add to the position amidst the rally.

We also discuss the hard questions about Zoom, including the security issues the company faced in April and why removing friction from video conferencing is what led to my high conviction prior to the coronavirus.

The interview touches on the cloud software market as a whole, where I discuss why I’m cautious on Fastly for its edge computing product despite the stock price being neck-to-neck with Zoom Video. I also expand on my strategy for analyzing tech stocks, including why I lead with product first, as well as understanding early adopters and user behavior.

Knox explains his technical strategy regarding Zoom and the importance of letting your winners run. He also discusses other topics, including the effects of the coronavirus, the cloud sector, and also touches on Datadog.

Knox’s strategy is to open trades on breakouts, while maintaining a very tight stop loss. He sets up a 5% to 10% risk stop loss, but does not put trailing stop losses on winning stocks.

Investing in Tech Stocks (Podcast)

Posted on June 11, 2020June 30, 2026 by io-fund
Investing in Tech Stocks (Podcast)

The average cloud software company reported 10% growth during the 2008-2009 recession. Meanwhile, we’ve seen the market react harshly towards companies guiding for 25% growth (such as Elastic). We know the winners from shelter-in-place but we are still sorting out what growth should look like in the middle of the category. My guess is that 25% is going to be higher than average by the time we exit this year.

I spoke about this and other topics this week on a podcast with Simon Erickson from 7 Investing. Simon Erickson is the CEO and Founder of 7 Investing, a company that releases stock tips for long-term investing. The monthly recommendations come from a team of four advisors with a track record of beating the market.

We discussed how cloud software is hot right now but that there are issues boiling beneath the surface. For instance, the upcoming renewal of large annual contracts that may be negotiated down in price or term, which payment model will be more resilient (usage based or per employee), and whether a cloud software company appeals to new subscribers or existing subscribers for upgrades (the latter may be stronger this year). We also discuss how to look for key metrics to help maintain conviction, such as Slack’s engagement 90 minutes per user.

Simon and I cover another topic around IPOs and why a buy and hold investor has different goals than a venture capitalist who is bringing the company public. In many ways, we are in the middle of a grand experiment where VC firms grow the top line at the expense of the bottom line with hopes the revenue growth will drive the public market interest. Over the last ten years, growth hacking has become a popular way of mechanically pumping the numbers through marketing rather than R&D. Uber was a supreme example of this as venture capital dollars were used to subsidize the rides rather than focus on achieving product-market fit, which is often determined by an equilibrium between supply and demand in the pricing.

We also discuss what’s next in tech investing with a discussion on connectivity. In order for most emerging technologies to become a reality, we need a better network layer. I believe we will be lay the groundwork for faster speeds and lower latency this year and next year to prepare for artificial intelligence and machine-to-machine communications. While some will call this 5G, I believe it also includes last mile connectivity and virtualizing infrastructure with software to lower capex.

Lastly, we talk about Roku, a stock that I covered very early after the company IPO’d and well before the market saw the potential. I explain why my conviction on Roku remains steady. Although Roku is an excellent operating system, a full tech stack, and an option for cord cutters, I see the real sticking point being the influx of pay TV advertising dollar over to Connected TV advertising.
